Stockholm, 2004. In Gottfrid Svartholm Wargs parents house this seemingly unassuming computer was buzzing away around the clock. With special software and an ordinary broadband connection this is the machine that started off one of the most loved, hated and controversial phenomena of modern times, file sharing site The Pirate Bay.
The Pirate Bay has, in less than ten years, become a contemporary historical phenomenon due to its prominent role in the file-sharing debate. The discussions that have sprung from this simple server deals heavily in topics such as freedom, global democracy, and of course the copyright "to be or not to be". Support groups and political parties gathered around The Pirate Bay's now famous flag to pick a fight with anti-piracy and copyright representatives. Together, they are all in the middle of a cultural revolution. A revolution that began with a dark gray tin box under a bed.
