Printing is only a small part of the cost of academic publishing. The bulk lies in the labour-intensive business of editing and reviewing submissions (rejecting two-thirds of them) and managing data. These costs are similar for open access publishers such as the Public Library of Science (Plos) in San Francisco, a competitor to Elsevier.
An independent study by the Research Information Network in the UK found that the shift from print to digital may save £1bn globally – worth having but only 12 per cent of total costs. Removing private companies from the equation might allow further savings, but it might equally reduce efficiency.
In any case, there will still be a hefty bill. About 90 per cent of the industry operates on subscription – the model Swartz so hated. The other 10 per cent is now open access, under which researchers (or research funders) have to pay journals between $1,000 and $5,000 an article to cover publishing costs. Anyone can then read it free.
Open access is appealing and is supported both by research funds, such as the US National Institutes of Health and the UK Wellcome Trust, and by the UK government. The trust believes it makes no sense to invest £700m each year on research without paying an extra £10m to make it widely available.
Research is largely read by other academics at the moment, most of whom have access through libraries. But there could be big benefits to broadening reach – Plos One, the science journal, is a trove of fascinating material....

Σχόλιο πάνω σε αυτό: Όταν υπάρχει κάποιο funding για την έρευνα συνήθως δικαιολογεί και χρήση κάποιου ποσού για να σταλούν τα αποτελέσματα σε open access περιοδικό. Στην Αμερική ήδη από το 2008 όλες οι δημοσιεύσεις που προκύπτουν από έρευνα χρηματοδοτούμενη από το NIH πρέπει οπωσδήποτε να είναι διαθέσιμες (μέσω του δικού τους Pubmed Central). Σιγά σιγά όλοι οι εκδοτικοί οίκοι αρχίζουν και βγάζουν open access περιοδικά ή δίνουν πρόσβαση σε μέρος των άρθρων.

I haven't bothered to mention the whole sad Aaron Swartz saga, because it's been covered elsewhere.

But having the involved US attorney then basically lie about it all in a very public statement is something that I find particularly offensive. Compare these two statements - one from July 2011, one from yesterday, and tell me Carmen Ortiz isn't lying..

Yesterday (as reported by the Wall Street Journal and elsewhere):

"At no time did this office ever seek – or ever tell Mr. Swartz’s attorneys that it intended to seek – maximum penalties under the law."

And July 2011 (as posted by justice.gov itself):

"SWARTZ faces up to 35 years in prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release, restitution, forfeiture and a fine of up to $1 million"

Maybe that official and very public PR thing wasn't "telling Mr. Swartz’s attorneys", right? Because in private, Ms Ortiz was probably talking about how she wanted to pay Aaron for his services, and just hug him. Right? Anybody?

Ms Ortiz, just admit you were an ass-hat, and apologize. Instead of this kind of crap. Weasel-wording and misleading about your actions is not making your office look any better.

Ήταν καταπληκτικό να βλέπεις αυτήν την κίνηση να εξελίσσεται στο twitter, μπροστά στα μάτια σου, από μια ιδέα που έριξε μια κοπέλα. To hashtag το άλλαξε μετά από συμβουλή μιας άλλης κοπέλας, και σχεδόν αμέσως, άρχισαν να ανεβαίνουν pdf. Στις 2 ώρες κάποιος έριξε την ιδέα να γραφτεί ένα προγραμματάκι να μαζεύει τα λινκς που ανεβαίνουν. Σε άλλες δυό ώρες, ξαναεμφανίζεται ο ίδιος και λέει, ιδού: έτοιμο, και δίνει το λίνκ στην ιστοσελίδα όπου μαζεύονται τα λινκς. Περνάνε άλλες δυο ώρες, κι ένας άλλος έφτιαξε την ιστοσελίδα ώστε να είναι πιο ελκυστική και λειτουργική, και οι δυό τους μαζί την μετέφεραν στο pdftribute.net domain. Νιώθω πραγματικά περίφανη, που υπάρχει κι ένα δικό μου pdf εκεί, κι ένα του άντρα μου, κι όλα τα άρθρα ενός φίλου μουσικολόγου από το Ιόνιο Πανεπιστήμιο.

Αυτήν καλό θα ήταν να την κυκλοφορήσουμε όσο το δυνατόν γίνεται, νομίζω.
