Let me introduce myself. My name is **************, I am fourth PhD Student in Sociology (Institute of Social Sciences of University of Lisbon) and my thesis is about the information sharing.
My research project includes a sociological examination of a so-called “Pirate Culture”. One of my hypothesis is to attempt to show how the public policies of communication and technology help to establish a new behavior to form new movements and new identities that emerge within this "culture".
For that, among others, I will use the Pirate Party case to help me. My intention is not to differentiate legal and illegal practices about information sharing. Above all, I intend to discuss, in its different aspects, the social and political changes resulting from new cultural practices of integration that shape the "Pirate Culture" that emerge as an important issue in the centre of the current technological society.
I already have talked with members of Pirate Party of Brazil and Portugal. Also, I did a simple interview with Rick Falkinge, Amelia Andersdotter and Christian Engström, to understand the beginning of the movement. Now, I need some help from other pirates to get a view around the World. Can you help me? And also indicate me other pirates with patience to do that?
I send my questions inline. I apologize to bother you with this questions that I might know the answer, because I have been researching about this theme for three years. But it is a protocol for a Phd thesis. Hope you understand!
Best Regards,

Εγώ πάντως είμαι πολύ περήφανη που γράφεται διδακτορική διατριβή για τους Πειρατές!
ΥΓ. "a sociological examination of a so-called “Pirate Culture”"... μπες στο φόρουμ των Ελλήνων ήθελα να του πω να δεις περιπτώσεις κοινωνιολογικής μελέτης και όχι μόνο...

Re: Μπορούμε να βοηθήσουμε ενα Phd?
Name: Dionisis
Age: 35
Gender: Male
From: Athens, Greece
1.How did you get involved with the pirate's movement? Got involved in the Pirate movement right after the Pirate Bay prosecution and trials.
2. How is your involvement within the movement (Local Party, PPI, PPEU, etc.)? I am a member of the Greek Pirate party and involved in the organization of the Athens office.
3. Today is possible to identify a pirate's practice and one that is not pirate? How? It should be easy but it is not. I believe that the "true" pirate movement revolves only around freedom (mostly online but offline too), digital rights (and by extention civil rights) and transparency in government. Unfortunately the financial crisis has brought into the various pirate parties in the southern countries, people that have other priorities (economy, constitutional changes etc etc). Usually identified as a variation of the indignados phenomenon.
4. What is the reason to be a pirate? How do you convince someone to become a pirate? No real reason other than apply the freedom you have online on the real world. No limits in personal expression, no limits in decision making. You cannot really convince someone to be a pirate if he does not understand the essence of the internet both as a tool and as a concept of decentralized nodes.
5. Who is Rick Falkvinge for the pirates? Is he the “poster boy” of the international movement? What do you think about him calling himself a "political evangelist”? Falkvinge is a voice and an evangelist among others. Personally I respect him for playing a part in starting the political part of the pirate movement, but I also find some of the things he says naive or even unapologetically populist. He is a visionary that's for sure. I can't talk about the other pirate parties but in the Greek one he is definetely not a poster boy, actually most members maybe have heard him as a name, definetely do not consider him a guru.
Can you answer me some critics that I've really already heard?
6. "The pirates' movement are cooperating with a consumers' ideology and collaborating to increase the digital monopolies".
I don't even understand the accusation. Why are pirates mindless consumers? If anything we are pretty clear that we demand full rights on our purchased goods, which reduces consumerism. Examples: A computer with free software lasts longer, a digital book or song without DRM can be lent without cost to multiple people, the right to reverse engineer a device adds new functionality that keeps it alive for longer (like the original XBOX with XBMC). Countless other examples exist, but in general hacking and reverse engineering work against mindless consumerism and planned obsolesence. Pirates are proud of their frankenstein linux boxes. Or their 5 year old macbooks.
7. “The pirates have a messianic confidence in information sharing and in the technology as the only resources capable to fully empower citizens and give back to the society, justice, peace and brotherhood”.
I am guilty of considering information technology a semi magical tool, but I don't believe that it alone can change society. Personal involvement and traditional politics must be employed to fully use IT for progress. That's a major problem, because "original" pirates do not mix well in the real world, and that's why there are terrible intestine conflicts in most pirate parties, between the "nerds" and the "politicians".
8. “The pirates have no care about important themes, like welfare, palestine's question, immigrants, gender's question, labor division, etc...”
That's both true and false. An original pirate (as per the pirate bay and original swedish pirate party) has all these questions solved because the solutions are direct results of the internet mentality. Welfare should be mandatory (in some form or another), Palestine should be a free independent state (self determination is an inviolable right), there are no immigrants (just people that should be given work), women should be equal to men etc etc. What we are accused of is that as Parties we don't have a stated policy on how to achieve those things. That's the true part, but a) we do not have this kind of user base to produce such a large scale agenda b) there are already parties that more or less cover our beliefs on that. My opinion is that we should back selectively the policies of other parties, and concetrate on the reason of our existence. Others believe that we should have a complete policy on everything. At the moment there is great debate about the need and capacity of producing such an agenda just to satisfy critics and appeal to a wider audience.
9. “They claim to be possible to create a "Liquid Democracy" and a State with transparency, but we have experience for many years as a political party, and we know that it is completely utopic because people do not worry about their rights or a political participation, just about their direct needs”.
I don't know if we can but we are surely trying. All other parties have failed without exception and that is the core of the European crisis and by extention of the economic recession. I can only give you my anecdotal evidence. I see everyday in our party, people that have pressing material needs but dedicate absurd amounts of time and labour participating in a fragile political construction without near future possibilities for political relevance. If anything our problem is the exact contrary. People are so hungry for participation that we risk falling apart trying to make everyone happy. Better try and fail tho', than adopting the ways of the failed politicians without vision that brought us here.
