Το όνομα της ομάδας είναι μια μακρινή αναφορά στους Monty Python και συγκεκριμένα στην ταινία τους “Life of Brian”. Κατά την συζήτηση για την επιλογή του ονόματος προτάθηκε και ένα όνομα η αγγλική εκδοχή του οποίου θα ήταν αρκετά κοντά σε μια ήδη υπάρχουσα συλλογικότητα. Αναπόφευκτα, κάποιος αναφέρθηκε σε μια σκηνή της ταινίας στην οποία ομάδες λίγων ατόμων με παρόμοια όσο και βαρύγδουπα ονοματα όπως “People’s Front of Judea”/”Judean People’s Front”/”Popular Front of Judea” αγωνίζονται περισσότερο για την μεταξύ τους επικράτηση παρά για την απελευθέρωση της Ιουδαίας. Με αφορμή αυτή την αναφορά λοιπόν προτάθηκε το Digital Liberation Network, το οποίο μας άρεσε τόσο για τον αυτοσαρκαστικό χαρακτήρα του (αφού θέτει έναν εν πολλοίς ουτοπικό στόχο ο οποίος είναι δυσαναλογα μεγάλος για οποιαδήποτε παρόμοια ομάδα) όσο και για το ότι είναι εύηχο τόσο στην ελληνική όσο και στην αγγλική του μορφή.
Οι σεχταριστές του Ψηφιακού Απελευθερωτικού Δικτύου θα μας βρουν μπροστά τους!

[dln] WCIT-12 και γιατί πρέπει να μας ενδιαφέρει
Σήμερα ξεκινάει μια σημαντική συνάντηση (WCIT-12 http://www.itu.int/en/wcit-12/Pages/default.aspx) στο Dubai κατά την οποία η ITU θα ήθελε να αποφασιστούν οι νέοι κανόνες (regulations) που ορίζουν τις διεθνείς επικοινωνίες. Η ITU επιθυμεί να αλλάξει τον τρόπο που λειτουργούν κομμάτια του Internet αυτή τη στιγμή ώστε το τοπίο να θυμίζει περισσότερο τον τρόπο που λειτουργούν οι κλασσικές τηλεπικοινωνίες ώστε να γίνει μεταξύ άλλων και περισσότερο ελεγχόμενο. Για το σκοπό αυτό φυσικά πιέζουν πάρα πολλές κυβερνήσεις κυρίως της Ασίας. (Για τις αποφάσεις τις ITU ψηφίζουν κυβερνήσεις)

Ενάντια στις προθέσεις της ITU έχουν ταχθεί πάρα πολλοί δυτικοί οργανισμοί και εταιρίες. Σχετικές ανακοινώσεις έχουν γίνει μέχρι και από την πλευρά της ΕΕ η οποία έχει προτείνει στα μέλη της να αντιταχθούν στις προτάσεις αυτές.

The treaty sets out general principles for assuring the free flow of information around the world, promoting affordable and equitable access for all and laying the foundation for ongoing innovation and market growth. The ITRs were last negotiated in Melbourne, Australia in 1988, and there is broad consensus that the text now needs to be updated to reflect the dramatically different information and communication technology (ICT) landscape of the 21st century.

The conference will consider a review (see PP-06 Resolution 146 http://www.itu.int/ITU-T/itr-eg/files/resolution146.pdf) of the International Telecommunication Regulations (ITRs) http://www.itu.int/oth/T3F01000001, which define the general principles for the provision and operation of international telecommunications.

About ITRs
Signed by 178 countries, ITRs are a global treaty applied around the world, which:
Establish general principles relating to the provision and operation of international telecoms;
Facilitate global interconnection and interoperability;
Underpin harmonious development and efficient operation of technical facilities;
Promote efficiency, usefulness, and availability of international telecommunication services, and
Treaty-level provisions are required with respect to international telecommunication networks and services.

A Key Opportunity
WCIT-12 presents a key opportunity to increase collaboration between countries, to help countries reach new levels of economic and social development through efficient telecom services, and to make the ITRs more relevant and valuable to ITU members, to help them respond to the challenges of a fast-evolving ICT environment.

Deadline for the submission of proposals
Recalling No. 40 of the General Rules of conferences, assemblies and meetings of the Union, on the time-limits for proposals to conferences, and Resolution 165 of the Plenipotentiary Conference (Guadalajara, 2010) on the cut-off dates for contributions to conferences, assemblies and meetings of the Union, by Decision 573, the ITU Council urges Member States to submit their contributions one month prior to the opening of the conference, i.e. 3 November 2012.

Coordinated proposals

Council Working Group
