Surprising, perhaps even shocking to opponents of online anonymity is that the lack of a face is more pernicious than the lack of a name. Recent scholarship has found that faceless interactions—specifically, without eye contact—leave dormant mirror neurons that activate during in-person contact. Humans, like other primates, are hardwired to read the face as a proxy for a person’s emotional state. The eyes in particular convey emotions a person feels, some conscious, some automatic, some designed to elicit empathy from other people. Just as someone with an antisocial personality disorder is blind to facial affect, so too does the Internet impair our ability to empathize.
